incite Design Studio was hired by the Archie R-V school district in February of 2010 to assist them in assessing the needs of the district for an April 2010 bond issue. The original school building, built in the early 1900’s, has been added onto several times and currently houses K-12 grades. The cafeteria, library, and music rooms were very outdated and were located such that constant interaction between the high school students and the elementary students hampered daily activity.
iDS worked with the board of education, the district superintendent, and members of the building committee to set goals for the project. The main objective was to create a learning environment in which students can have access to the core support areas of the school without interaction between the lower and higher grades.
The design solution turns the existing auxiliary gym into a new state of the art library which is now the focal point of the facility instead of being tucked away in the elementary school wing. The cafeteria that was in the basement of the elementary wing is now centralized in a brand new kitchen and commons area that provides plenty of natural light. Adjacent to the commons is a new 1,200 seat competition gymnasium that also doubles as a FEMA tornado safe room. The unique concrete dome shell of the gymnasium offers a safe place for all of the occupants of the building and the community in the event of a tornado. The music rooms which were once housed in a metal building on the grounds have now been brought into the building. In addition to the support services, seven new classrooms will be afforded the district by the reorganization of the facility.
On April 6, 2010 the patrons of Archie overwhelmingly approved the bond issue to make this project happen. iDS and our consultants are working closely with the State Emergency Management Agency to capture almost $900,000 in FEMA funding.
