LEWIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL | NEW CONSTRUCTION

Location: Excelsior Springs School District

Size: 71,000

cost: $28,500,000

As part of the phase two of the long range facility plan, the district is moving forward with plans to place a no tax increase measure on the April 2023 ballot that will allow for the replacement of the aging, 71-year-old Lewis Elementary School, and subsequent demo of the current building.

Located in the heart of Downtown Excelsior Springs, Lewis Elementary School has served the community well, but has exceeded its lifespan. The brand new, two-story elementary school is a site adaption of the Cornerstone Elementary School that iDS completed for the district in 2021. With the goal of keeping the same architectural vocabulary throughout all the new and renovated district facilities, the new Elementary School will have a similar floor plate but will face specific site challenges; such as a land locked tight downtown site and a flat site compared to the upper level entry and sloped site found at Cornerstone.

The new Lewis Elementary will drop the Admin and Secure Entry portion of the building to the lower level and will be directly adjacent to the cafeteria in lieu of the media center. The current Lewis Elementary School has a capacity of 425 students. The new school will be scaled down to hold a maximum student capacity of 500 students.
