iDS began working with the Shawnee Mission School District in 2009 with renovation projects to three facilities. SM North High School administrative offices were renovated to provide an additional office as well as to create a more cohesive configuration. Improvements to Briarwood Elementary focused on updating and improving the nurse's office and restroom. At Moody Elementary, water infiltration problems were resolved at the school's lower-level cafeteria.
incite Design Studio also assisted them with the evaluation of their eleven school facilities to prepare the Facility Master Plan for the next ten years. Work associated with the facility assessment included conducting meetings with the review team to establish a baseline of evaluation, generating surveys for administration, and assessing and reporting on the condition of the eleven facilities. Appraisal criteria included the school site, structural and mechanical features of the building, plant maintainability, safety and security, educational adequacy, and the environment for education. Goals of the evaluation include identifying areas for future expansion of facilities, highlighting strengths of design in facilities that excel, and determining best design practices for future construction projects.
In Phase II of the Long Range Plan, information gathered in Phase I was used to evaluate each facility in regards to utilization, instructional capacity, and educational adequacy. incite Design Studio recalculated the instructional capacity of each school in the district for this phase.
