WEST LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL | ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS

Location: JACKSON R-II School District

cost: $5,000,000

As part of the district’s Long Range Facility Plan, the goal of the additions and renovations to West Lane Elementary are to expand capacity so that a utilization rate of below 85% is projected based on the anticipated enrollment in 5 years. Enrollment at West Lane Elementary is expected to continue to increase over the next 5 years – from the current enrollment of 516 to approximately 540, or more. The maximum enrollment in which the current facility can comfortably accommodate all students is 490, and ideally can accommodate 419 students. Before modifications to the facility, the school was already 5% over the maximum capacity, and nearly 25% over the ideal capacity. This affects the overall learning experience of students.

The building addition and renovations provide 20 core learning environments and two new rooms for special education. A new size-appropriate media center, art and music rooms were added as well as a new admin area. The building expansion is a FEMA Shelter that contains a new gymnasium and six classrooms.

In addition, a substantial amount of building and staff support spaces will be returned to the facility that has previously been taken over by teaching space to accommodate the building’s capacity issues.
